“You can say that and expect me to jump if it is not the right situation for me,” Stanton said. “It doesn’t matter what the dynamic was. You are not going to force me to do anything, regardless.
“It was said so it was definitely a thought of something that I was going to have to deal with.”
The Jaguars had been playing with fire with their slow starts and some mistakes from Blake Bortles. And with Leonard Fournette shut down, it caught up to them in Arizona. “Sacksonville” can’t afford to have off games or lapses when that happens.
The Seahawks got through an expected grind in San Francisco coming off a short week. As they’ve been rolling on the road of late, they need to set things right at home. They go as Russell Wilson goes, but it would helpful to have someone occasionally run the ball well who is not the quarterback.
The Ravens crushed another opponent at home in prime time on Monday, as things continue to break in their favor to nail down an AFC wild-card spot. Their schedule is cake beyond a Week 14 rematch with the Steelers.
At any point in those six years he could get hurt or run into some other career-altering obstacle, so he carries the risk all the way through those six years. But if he’d waited just two years he could have come as an unrestricted free agent, and most likely scored a contract guaranteeing him $200 million or more. (In the meantime, he’d have been paid more in Japan than he will make in his first years with the Angels.) My own estimate is he probably cost himself around $90 million, and with a lot more risk.
Predicting how entertaining a game will be is harder (and more foolhardy) than picking who wins, but circumstances indicate that this is the most unwatchable game of the weekend. The four quarterbacks likely in play: Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, Matt Moore and Jay Cutler. Their seasons are in the toilet for legit reasons. The Broncos will be without the suspended Aqib “Two Chains” Talib, but against this team, does it really matter?
What 49ers general manager John Lynch will remember most about Jimmy Garoppolo’s starting debut for San Francisco is not anything the quarterback individually did during a 26-for-37, 293-yard outing.
“To me, the really good and great players make people around them better,” Lynch told Sporting News during a Friday telephone interview. “That’s what I was most pleased to see. He lifted the entire team.
Falcons receiver Julio Jones caught 12 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-20 win over the Buccaneers. It was the third career game with at least 250 receiving yards for Jones and no other player in NFL history has more than one such game.
The Patriots ran a fake punt on fourth-and-9 from their own 26-yard line on the opening series of Sunday’s game against the Dolphins and they got it to set the tone in a 35-17 victory. It was New England’s first fake punt since 2004.
I’m just not sure the Stars have the scoring depth to push them over the hump. As Greg already noted, the Western Conference is going to be competitive for the last few spots. I’ve somehow talked myself into the Golden Knights making it — barring a pre-deadline fire sale to continue collecting assets for the future.
Their window to reach the postseason extends only that far, while their stack of arbitration-eligible players this winter could take their budget beyond $100 million for just the third time in franchise history. I’m expecting GM Mike Hazen to try some creative solutions to work around that expanding budget while keeping the team competitive. — Kahrl
Judge and Stanton had the two highest average exit velocities on home runs last season, according to Statcast (minimum 10 homers) — Judge at 110.0 mph and Stanton at 109.3. They combined for 47 batted balls with an exit velocity of 115-plus mph, while the rest of MLB combined had 39 such batted balls, according to Statcast. The two also combined for the eight hardest-hit batted balls in the majors last season (Judge with five) and nine of the top 10.
It will be interesting to see if the fight of their remaining healthy players can save Chuck Pagano’s job.
So much for the firing of Ben McAdoo and the re-starting of Eli Manning providing a spark for the offense and defense under Steve Spagnuolo. This team looks checked-out and overwhelmed until the new full-time GM and coach are in place.
Eagles coach Doug Pederson on losing quarterback Carson Wentz for the season with a torn ACL: “I hate it for Carson Wentz; I hate it for the career and the season he’s been having. But at the same time it’s been the next man up mentality and that’s how we approach it this week.”
With numbers like that it’s no wonder people are starting to talk about the Tigers QB’s draft prospects. So, it begs the question, how does the junior QB stack up?
The most notable thing right away is Lock’s size. He stands at 6-4, and looks every inch of it on tape, and weighs in at 225 pounds. Second, he has the arm strength to go downfield. He does a good job of putting touch on deep balls, even those that stretch the normal boundaries of college quarterbacks.
I know Mara to be a fine man and an excellent team owner who understands the business of NFL football and the need for patience — in the mold of his father Wellington Mara, who was a pillar among NFL team owners for decades. It surely was painful for John Mara to make these moves with four games left in the season.
The Seattle D held MVP candidate Carson Wentz to 45 passing yards in the first half, as the ‘Hawks took a 10-3 lead into the locker room. Wentz finished with 348 yards through the air, but most of that production came when Philly was in come-back mode. The Seahawks also turned Wentz over twice (one interception, one fumble), both in their own end zone, robbing the Eagles of scoring opportunities.
MLB provides long-term disability for umpires who cannot work because of concussion effects, the same as it does for other permanent injuries.
Scott wonders about umpires who are cleared as part of the concussion protocol and then face the choice of continuing to work and risk further injury, or leaving the game.
“That needs to be addressed,” he said. “Maybe my situation can be a catalyst for that.”
Zibanejad has been skating on his own and participated in New York’s morning skate, but has not been cleared for contact. … New York D Marc Staal skated in his 719th game, tying Andy Bathgate for 11th place on the franchise’s career games list. … Stars F Jason Dickinson, who was recalled from the minors over the weekend, played on Dallas’ fourth line. … Dallas F Antoine Roussel was held out after suffering an upper-body injury against the Golden Knights on Saturday.
Even struggling from the field, Russell Westbrook managed to record a triple-double, and he converted two game-winning free throws in overtime.
Westbrook’s free throws with 5.2 seconds left gave him 20 points on the night to go with 14 assists and 11 rebounds as the Oklahoma City Thunder rallied for a 102-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.
“When you’re at eight, nine, 10 in a row, most teams would start to point fingers and start to just find excuses,” Giroux told the Philadelphia Daily News. “That wasn’t the case. We were all in the same boat, and no one went over to the dark side. We stuck together, and that shows a lot of what this team is made of.”
Colorado mustered only seven goals during its losing streak but equaled that total in this game.
“When you lose a handful in a row you’ve got to stick with the process,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “I think that’s what our guys did tonight.”
“I think Sutton is the most underrated player in this draft,” the GM said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. (NFL GMs are not allowed to comment publicly on current college players.) “He’s got some flaws but you watch him on film and you see some things that translate well on Sundays.
“There’s a chance he’s the first wide receiver off the board.”
The Cardinals gained 64 yards in the first half and 197 in the second.
Blaine Gabbert completed 17 of 26 for 178 yards for Arizona with no interceptions, but was sacked eight times, most by a Cardinals quarterback this season. Kerwynn Williams rushed for 73 yards as Arizona outgained Tennessee on the ground 136-65.
Jimmy Garoppolo threw for a career-high 334 yards and a touchdown to help the San Francisco 49ers to their second straight win, 26-16, over the Houston Texans on Sunday.
The Rams suffered several injury scares in their Week 14 game, though none of them came close to Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz potentially tearing his ACL on a negated touchdown run.
Trumaine Johnson, who is on his second consecutive franchise tag, ended the game in concussion protocol, which means the Rams could be without their top two cornerbacks heading into a road game against the division-rival Seattle Seahawks next Sunday.
Left tackle Andrew Whitworth injured his ankle in the second quarter, but he returned in the second half. Right tackle Rob Havenstein injured his ankle in the fourth quarter and didn’t come back, prompting Darrell Williams to enter the game. Williams was immediately beaten by defensive end Chris Long on an eventual strip sack of Jared Goff. McVay did not have an update on Havenstein.
“I was upfront and honest with Eli,” McAdoo told reporters Friday, via ESPN. “I don’t have any regrets there.”
However, McAdoo’s assertion he is “on the same page” as Mara – a phrase he repeated three times during Friday’s press conference – doesn’t seem to hold up. McAdoo said Tuesday the plan was to start Manning in Sunday’s matchup with the Raiders and replace him with Geno Smith for the second half; Mara said Wednesday that the plan was to start Manning and keep him in the game “if he’s playing well in the first half, we’re winning the game, it looks like we’ve got a chance, the offense is clicking.”
Vladimir Tarasenko dropped his gloves and inspired his teammates.
On a night when he had two goals and two assists , Tarasenko got in a rare fight Tuesday during the St. Louis Blues’ 8-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
“Our offense line has been banged up here of late,” Lynch said. “I don’t want it to sound like, ‘We’re willing to send C. J. Beathard out there to get beat up,’ but we feel like that’s going to settle down.”
“We lost Pierre Garcon (to a season-ending disc injury) and we’re playing frankly a lot of young guys,” Lynch said. “Marquise Goodwin, who’s been a number three guy, he’s our number one right now. That’s a little bit of a struggle.”
Well, at least until midway through the second quarter. That’s when Burfict got ejected for touching an official following a play that ended out of bounds.
Burfict, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness two snaps earlier, sauntered off the field showing no signs of remorse for letting down his teammates while making the Johnny Manziel “money” gesture to fans at Nissan Stadium.
We’re back for the second half in Seattle. The Seahawks will start the period’s opening drive at their 28.
Meanwhile, it’s another week and another court hearing … and likely another starting assignment for Elliott in Atlanta on Sunday.
But at some point, the time could come for Elliott to sit out several weeks. At this point, even though they’re prepared to play without their star running back, the Cowboys have to hope it’s not until the start of the 2018 season.
He said “additional sanctions are warranted to penalize the club for the violations committed by its employees.”
Therefore, the Braves will be prohibited from signing any international player for more than $10,000 during the 2019-20 signing period. Also, the team’s international signing bonus pool for the 2020-21 signing period will be reduced by 50 percent.
Bradley Chubb, DE, North Carolina State — Chubb was a one-man wrecking crew in N.C. State’s 17-14 win at Boston College. The 6-4, 275-pound senior had eight tackles with 2 1/2 sacks and a forced fumble. He continues to assert himself as the top defensive draft prospect.
Cam Newton with another big play for Carolina. This time, he keeps the ball on a zone-read play and runs for 69 yards, moving the Panthers to the Miami 18.
Touchdown, Miami. Kenyan Drake accelerates through the line of scrimmage and makes a Carolina defender miss in the secondary on his way to a 66-yard touchdown run. The Dolphins now trail 31-14 with 5:47 to play in the third quarter.
On the bright side in the AFC, Brady is playing as well as ever. But with Brady at age 40, nobody knows how long he can continue executing at such a high level before his career goes into decline.
The Saints survive here, thanks to playing the doormat Buccaneers in Week 17 while the Falcons and Panthers play each other. Atlanta will make familiar noise with a 6-1 finish, including big wins over both rivals. Carolina’s offensive inconsistency will lead to a couple clunkers like the Bears game in Week 7.
In the end, with the NFC North and NFC West both looking less certain to punch two tickets to the playoffs, the opportunity is there for all three NFC South teams to crash the party, with a chance for all three to play in the divisional round.
The third-year NHLer scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season, one at even strength and one with the extra skater, in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday. As long as Donskoi remains fixed on a scoring line with Logan Couture and continues to skate with the secondary, if not the primary, power play, the 25-year-old boasts sufficient upside to justify rostering in deeper fantasy leagues.
With three minutes left, Matt Moore connected with Kenny Stills on a 61-yard touchdown to tie the game at 20. At that point, those on the under were hoping for a field goal to make it a 23-20 final. That scenario looked as though it had played out perfectly, as Patrick Murray’s 35-yard field goal with four seconds left indeed put Tampa Bay up by three.
The Sierra-Leonean rookie only ran for 42 yards on eight carries but he broke off a 24-yard run embarrassing the Washington defense in the process.
But wait…there was more. Kamara then caught six passes for 74 yards and most importantly, the game tying touchdown (as he juggled the ball) before also running in the two point conversion to help the Saints overcome a 15-point deficit. From there the Saints took the game into overtime and finalized a 34-31 victory.
“Third downs, we’re going to show it from the conventional camera because that’s the most important down in football,” Gaudelli said, via Pro Football Talk. “Once we’re inside the red zone we’re going to show it from the conventional camera. We want to try to be smart about it and not just say, ‘Here’s SkyCam come hell or high water.’ It’s, ‘Here’s SkyCam in the most advantageous places.'”
President Trump on Monday said the NFL should suspend Marshawn Lynch for sitting during the national anthem after the Raiders running back took a seat Sunday before Oakland’s game in Mexico City but stood for Mexico’s national anthem.
Lynch’s moves Sunday weren’t unprecedented. Earlier this season, in NFL games in London, some players kneeled for the U.S. anthem but stood for “God Save the Queen.”
The president’s first tweet of the day pushed him into the sports world again after a weekend in which he was embroiled in a back and forth over how much he helped get three UCLA players released after their detainment in China.
Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch enjoyed two rushing touchdowns in his first game back from a one-game suspension. It’s the first time Lynch has had two rushing TDs in a game since Dec. 21, 2014.
Kate, who no longer drives for Uber, said she doesn’t want money, but wanted to tell the truth “about a powerful man who felt entitled to my body when all I wanted to do was my job.”
“If I’m silent, I fear that further harm will come to other women, if it hasn’t already,” she said. “He sexually assaulted me, and I have every right to tell the damn truth about it.”
A spokesperson for Uber told BuzzFeed News in a statement that Winston was permanently removed from the app after Kate filed an incident report.
