The Eagles didn’t have anything to play for, but getting shut out is never a great look.

Especially when the quarterback who is supposed to carry the torch now that Carson Wentz is gone finished with a 9.3 passer rating.

Nick Foles threw 11 passes before leaving the game, but completed just four of them for 39 yards and threw an interception. Philadelphia’s defense is going to have to lead the way, but the Eagles’ offense has to at least score a few points and that looks like a real problem.

You want to know why Tom Brady goes to bed at 8:30 and doesn’t eat sugar and has avocado ice cream and treats his body so reverentially? For days like this. Buttoning his blue checked shirt after the game at his locker, he smiled just thinking about it. “Such a great place to play … football at its best,” Brady told me. “The crowd supports their team so much, which is fantastic, but the other side is, they give us so much too. We feed off it.”

Pittsburgh 11-2, New England 10-3. Winner likely to get home-field in the AFC. But with 10-4 Jacksonville lurking, the loser could end up without a week off to start the playoffs. And there was more. The Steelers had a four-game losing streak against New England, and were just 3-10 against the Pats in the Belichick era. “We’ve got to prove they don’t have our number,” said Steelers fan Phil Gennaro, an insurance adjustor on his third IC Light at Tequila Cowboy, a bar in the shadow of Heinz Field, Saturday night. “This game’s bigger for us than for them.”

The biggest question for the Steelers’ immediate financial future is how much longer Ben Roethlisberger hopes to play. He’s due to count $23.2 million against the salary cap in 2018 and 2019, although he’s already dropped a few hints that retirement could be on the horizon.

Ninety-minute team lift, on an outdoor roof deck. “Everybody seems like they were in a good mood,” Graham says. “They understand what [the Seattle loss] was, and we move forward.” At the same time, the players are turning their clocks backward. The Eagles stayed on Eastern time for the Seattle game but switch to Pacific time for the week in California. It’s an adjustment: Graham sheepishly admits he hit the hay at 8:30 p.m. PT on Monday night.

thes centered on game corrections—offense at Angel Stadium, defense at the hotel—the team’s 14 rookies bus to Orange County’s Ronald McDonald House. Fred Hill, the former Eagles tight end, helped found the original Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia in 1974 after his 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. The rookies spend about an hour with Hill and the people the house serves, families of seriously ill children, playing cornhole and decorating picture frames. “As soon as we got off the bus, they were so cheerful and almost, like, starstruck,” says receiver Mack Hollins. nationals_013

The Colts keep coming up lame in close games.

Judge and Stanton had the two highest average exit velocities on home runs last season, according to Statcast (minimum 10 homers) — Judge at 110.0 mph and Stanton at 109.3. They combined for 47 batted balls with an exit velocity of 115-plus mph, while the rest of MLB combined had 39 such batted balls, according to Statcast. The two also combined for the eight hardest-hit batted balls in the majors last season (Judge with five) and nine of the top 10.

It will be interesting to see if the fight of their remaining healthy players can save Chuck Pagano’s job.

So much for the firing of Ben McAdoo and the re-starting of Eli Manning providing a spark for the offense and defense under Steve Spagnuolo. This team looks checked-out and overwhelmed until the new full-time GM and coach are in place.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson on losing quarterback Carson Wentz for the season with a torn ACL: “I hate it for Carson Wentz; I hate it for the career and the season he’s been having. But at the same time it’s been the next man up mentality and that’s how we approach it this week.”

With numbers like that it’s no wonder people are starting to talk about the Tigers QB’s draft prospects. So, it begs the question, how does the junior QB stack up?

The most notable thing right away is Lock’s size. He stands at 6-4, and looks every inch of it on tape, and weighs in at 225 pounds. Second, he has the arm strength to go downfield. He does a good job of putting touch on deep balls, even those that stretch the normal boundaries of college quarterbacks.

I know Mara to be a fine man and an excellent team owner who understands the business of NFL football and the need for patience — in the mold of his father Wellington Mara, who was a pillar among NFL team owners for decades. It surely was painful for John Mara to make these moves with four games left in the season.lakers_010

Rangers C Mika Zibanejad missed his sixth consecutive game due to a concussion.

The Seattle D held MVP candidate Carson Wentz to 45 passing yards in the first half, as the ‘Hawks took a 10-3 lead into the locker room. Wentz finished with 348 yards through the air, but most of that production came when Philly was in come-back mode. The Seahawks also turned Wentz over twice (one interception, one fumble), both in their own end zone, robbing the Eagles of scoring opportunities.

MLB provides long-term disability for umpires who cannot work because of concussion effects, the same as it does for other permanent injuries.

Scott wonders about umpires who are cleared as part of the concussion protocol and then face the choice of continuing to work and risk further injury, or leaving the game.

“That needs to be addressed,” he said. “Maybe my situation can be a catalyst for that.”

Zibanejad has been skating on his own and participated in New York’s morning skate, but has not been cleared for contact. … New York D Marc Staal skated in his 719th game, tying Andy Bathgate for 11th place on the franchise’s career games list. … Stars F Jason Dickinson, who was recalled from the minors over the weekend, played on Dallas’ fourth line. … Dallas F Antoine Roussel was held out after suffering an upper-body injury against the Golden Knights on Saturday.

Even struggling from the field, Russell Westbrook managed to record a triple-double, and he converted two game-winning free throws in overtime.

Westbrook’s free throws with 5.2 seconds left gave him 20 points on the night to go with 14 assists and 11 rebounds as the Oklahoma City Thunder rallied for a 102-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.panthers_096
