Cichy had a headset on for the entire game against Maryland and often gave tips to the other Badger linebackers.

Hear me out on this one. Certainly, there are stars to pay up for at every position (including fellow-SF Kevin Durant) but my “must haves” tonight are James Harden and DeMarcus Cousins. Considering you might also want the likes of Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis or Ben Simmons, where can you reliably save? Who is the cheapest player at a position you don’t mind saving on that you can confidently build around?

Three-time All-Star Kyle Lowry got off to a slow start but picked it up big time in the second half before finishing with a triple-double — 11 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Ball was seen at times running back and forth as Lowry ran off screens and did his usual thing, hitting 3s or driving and kicking. This is the first time in Ball’s career that an opposing starting point guard went for a triple-double.

“She was taking steps toward making sure the team runs smoothly as a point guard and that she communicates,” he said. “She has a little more sense of what it means to be a great leader and that she executes at a high level.”

“He’s gonna find a way to help us win games on Saturdays,” Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard says. “He’s all in, and it’s really cool to see that approach. He cares about the program.”

I’m hopeful the Islanders can get some clarity between then and July 1, and relay that to Tavares. One thing working in the Islanders’ favor: They have the money, and they are able to offer Tavares a max eight-year deal, when he can only get seven years elsewhere. GM Garth Snow has said he thinks the world of Tavares; the center has hinted it is his preference to stay. Call me a sap or an optimist, but I like to think this is one Islanders saga that gets a happy ending.flames_116

Jamie Dixon’s TCU squad could end the season as Bill Self’s greatest threat in the league.

The NIT champions finished 12-21 the year before Dixon arrived and 24-15 in his first season, which ended with an 88-56 victory over Georgia Tech in the NIT championship.

This is a team that beat Kansas in the Big 12 tournament. A seven-game losing streak at the end of conference play ruined TCU’s NCAA tournament chances. But the Horned Frogs lost four of those games by five points or less.

If you are light on blueliners and looking for a buy-low option, Boychuk may be a good choice. He has only two points in 11 games thus far, but the Islanders have an offensively gifted team, which should provide the former Boston Bruins defenseman with opportunities to pick up assists. Boychuk has been reliable over his time with the Islanders, scoring between 23 and 35 points each year since being traded to New York.

Sometimes, what appear to be minor deals end up making a big difference. Van Noy, a second-round pick in 2014, had largely disappointed the Lions. But the Patriots saw a role for him in their scheme. He is tied for the team lead with 3.5 sacks this season. He also has been credited with 55 tackles, second on the team.

The defense and the running game have been great for the Jaguars, but the elephant in the room has been the play of Blake Bortles. He has a Total QBR below 50, and he’s one of four qualified quarterbacks completing fewer than 60 percent of his passes.

The Lions have lost three straight games and four of their past five, so there’s plenty to be concerned about in Detroit right now. Matthew Stafford’s performance against the blitz is among the top worries. He has a league-worst 19 Total QBR against the blitz.

Emotions ran high as the arena counted down the final minutes before the first puck dropped.

In September, Graham told ESPN.com he returned to Kansas and rejected a chance to turn pro because he wanted to finish his senior season and bounce back from the “B-minus” season he had in 2016-17.

If 13.4 PPG, 4.1 APG, 1.5 SPG, 38.8 percent from the 3-point line and 79.3 percent from the charity stripe is a B-minus season, then the rest of the Big 12 should fear what’s ahead with Graham replacing Wooden Award winner Frank Mason as KU’s catalyst.

Vernon Davis, TE, Washington Redskins (13.8 percent): Starting tight end Jordan Reed left the team’s Week 8 game because of injury, opening the door to the possibility of Davis stepping in again to fill his role. Davis remains a plus athlete for the position and a player who, when called upon, has been a reliable piece of the offense. He has four games with 50 or more receiving yards already this season and should crack our top 12 tight end ranks for Week 9 if Reed sits.

There were video tributes from players around the league, and another from famous musicians, to declare themselves on Vegas’s team.

The Astros wanted desperately to wrap up their first title in franchise history amid a sea of orange here in Houston. Saturday’s 6-2 loss eliminated that possibility. But they return to Los Angeles needing only one victory with a fresh Justin Verlander on tap Tuesday night. Verlander threw only 79 pitches at Chavez Ravine last week, and Hinch resisted the temptation to use him for an inning or two of relief between starts over the weekend.

The question is, who will Hinch go to in the late innings if Verlander is unable to crank it up and go the distance? Hinch went to Chris Devenski for the save Sunday night, and that didn’t work out so well when a Yasiel Puig homer and a Chris Taylor RBI single turned a 12-9 Houston lead into a 12-12 tie in the ninth.

Golden Knights are bettors’ favorite to win Stanley Cup

More money has been bet on the Vegas Golden Knights to win the Stanley Cup than any other team at Nevada’s largest sportsbook, William Hill U.S., which is now facing a liability of more than $1 million on the expansion franchise.

The Golden Knights were as high as 300-1 to win the Stanley Cup in the offseason. Heading into Monday’s game at the New York Islanders, though, the Knights were 40-1 at the Westgate SuperBook.

Overall, CG Technology vice president of risk Jason Simbal said his book’s liability on the Knights was currently in the mid-six-figure range.

Vegas improved to 8-1 on the season with a 7-0 win over Colorado. The Knights’ next six games are on the road.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are the current Stanley Cup favorites at 7-1, followed by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs, who are each 10-1 at the Westgate.

1. Matthew Stafford shreds Steelers’ secondary but has little to show for it — The Steelers entered Sunday night’s game allowing only 147 yards passing a game, the lowest in the NFL. Playing with a banged up Golden Tate (shoulder) and a makeshift offensive line, Stafford was able to put up big numbers through the air thanks to quick screens and short routes.

3. Steelers have chance to separate from AFC contenders. At 6-2 on the season, tied with the Patriots atop of the AFC and a half-game ahead of the Chiefs, Pittsburgh enters an interesting part of the schedule which may allow them to continue their winning streak beyond three games. Following their bye week, the Steelers have a date with the hapless Colts, followed by a Thursday night home game against the struggling Titans. Ten days later, on Nov. 26, is a home game against the Aaron Rodgers-less Packers. Looking ahead, a Dec. 17 home game against the Pats may decide home-field advantage in the playoffs. blues-015

Former Rutgers coach Kevin Bannon charged with stealing from parks system

A former Rutgers University men’s basketball coach diverted thousands of dollars of public money from a New Jersey park system to a nonprofit he controlled and gave him and his family benefits including free concert tickets, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday.

Kevin Bannon’s attorney, John Furlong, said he’s “supremely confident” he will prevail at trial after he was charged with receiving unauthorized benefits for himself and others while leading the Mercer County Park Commission

The NFL wants to enforce Elliott’s suspension this season and confirm Goodell’s authority to issue punishment based on “conduct detrimental” to the league as mandated in Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch informed Giles that he will be removed from the closer role after another dismal performance Saturday night in a 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that evened the series at two games apiece.

“He wasn’t surprised,” Hinch said Sunday before Game 5 at Minute Maid Park. “He understands, and he wants to be there for his teammates.”

World Series baseballs are slicker than the ones used during the regular season, members of the Dodgers and Astros said in a Sports Illustrated report published Sunday.
Giles has made seven appearances in the postseason and has allowed at least one run in six of them. He has faced 40 batters and given up 12 hits — including three home runs — and six walks. Giles’ postseason ERA is 11.74.

The World Series has been particularly rough for Giles. In Game 2, he gave up a 10th-inning leadoff homer to Yasiel Puig before allowing a two-out walk to Logan Forsythe and an RBI single to Kike Hernandez. In Game 4, he entered with the score tied in the ninth inning, faced three batters and didn’t record an out.

“I didn’t do my job, plain and simple,” Giles said. “I let the team down.”blues-011

Napoli Star Lorenzo Insigne Admits He Nearly Quit Football After Scouts Told Him He Wouldn’t Make It

Insigne told UEFA.com that he considered ditching his aspirations because of his height, at one point, but underwent a successful trial at Napoli that changed his mind.

Napoli have a perfect record in the Italian top flight so far this season, and are soon to come up against Manchester City in the Champions League.

“We mustn’t step on to the field afraid to face them,” the forward added, referring to Pep Guardiola’s side. “They have great champions, but if we play as a team, we can cause them problems. We must have faith, because we’ve got the quality.”

In a game at Dodger Stadium last month, San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence carried some ashes of a deceased Dodgers fan with him in a necklace that he wore on the field.

According to a documentary commissioned by UNINTERRUPTED, the Dodgers turned down a request to spread some of the ashes of Henry Janiszewski, who died in 2010, at the ballpark. Filmmaker Matt Liston of the digital series “Mr. Impossible” said he contacted Pence, who agreed to help Janiszewski’s daughter.

Hunter Pence wore a necklace containing the ashes of a deceased Dodgers fan, after L.A. declined to let the man’s daughter spread his ashes at Dodger Stadium. Uninterrupted
Melissa Janiszewski had already spread some of her father’s ashes at several other places he revered around the world, but she wanted to bring them to one final place, where she said she spent many evenings of her childhood enjoying baseball with her father.

“For a Neapolitan, wearing the Napoli jersey, it’s not something that happens every day. I hope that other young Neapolitans can, like me, make these childhood dreams come true.”

You need explosive plays and you need to work the ball down the field and have a chance to score quickly.

Wolves: Minnesota’s last victory over San Antonio came April 8, 2014, in Minneapolis. The Timberwolves have lost 12 straight to the Spurs and eight straight in San Antonio. . After being one of the league’s youngest teams the past few seasons, Minnesota has only one rookie on its roster this season, 7-foot center Justin Patton. . Patton missed the season opener while recovering from surgery on his left foot.

Spurs: San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said there is no timetable for Leonard’s return from right quadriceps tendinopathy. . Parker plans on returning in mid-November from left quadriceps tendon surgery. . San Antonio swept all four games against Minnesota last season, winning by an average of 9.0 points. . San Antonio is coming off back-to-back, 60-win seasons, the first time in franchise history they have achieved that feat. . The Spurs have won 128 regular-season games since Aldridge joined the team, which is the best two-year span in the franchise’s history. The second-best mark came the two years prior to Aldridge’s arrival, when the team won 122 games.

After a 20-yard pass play to Berrian, Griese went over the middle to Muhammad, who scooted across the formation from left to right, hit the sideline, and found a burst at age 34 to bolt in for the touchdown.

We missed our onside kick, but actually stuffed the Vikings on three run plays, and took back over at the 19 after another punt. Now it was time for something new. Hester was on the field.

“For me, as a quarterback, I’d love to see him out there every play,” Griese said after the game. “It’s hard in this league as an offense to go 10, 12, 15 plays and score a touchdown.”lakers_016

NFL odds 2017, Week 7: Betting lines, trends, and analysis for the week’s top games

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 4-0 straight up and 3-0-1 against the spread in their last four games against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Steelers hope to extend that winning streak and solidify their spot atop the AFC North division with a win over the Bengals this Sunday.

The offensive line has been completely inept. And things looked especially grim with Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall both landing on injured reserve after Week 5.

So far, the change is working. New York kicked off Sunday night’s matchup with Denver with a 13-play, 69-yard field goal drive. It was the first time this season the Broncos defense allowed a score on an opponent’s opening possession.

Who is Mike Sullivan? Sullivan is in his second season as the Giants’ offensive coordinator. It’s his second stint in New York, where he previously was the wide receivers coach and then the quarterbacks coach from 2004 through 2011.

The Vikings were a disaster along the offensive line in 2016, and that showed in the limitations the offense had. Bradford had no time to really do anything longer than a checkdown, and the running game was among the most atrocious the Vikings have fielded since the advent of the 16-game schedule. I know that other new faces have contributed to that, such as Remmers at right tackle and rookie Pat Elflein at center.

Rich Hill at Pats Pulpit decided to rank each newcomer in New England. It’s no surprise that wide receiver Brandin Cooks came out on top:

Cooks has been an every-down player on offense and ranks 11th in the league with 294 receiving yards. His two receiving touchdowns are tied for sixth most in the league. His average receptions of 22.6 leads the league. He’s already contributing at a high level and he’s only going to get better.falcons_021

La Russa steps down as D-backs’ chief analyst

The Diamondbacks announced Wednesday that Tony La Russa will leave his position as chief baseball analyst at the end of October.

La Russa, who was inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame for his managerial career, served from 2015-2016 as the team’s chief baseball officer before moving into the analyst position this year.

Wow.

That play is the NBA equivalent of breaking a dude’s ankles and then driving to the basket to throw down a monster reverse jam. And then hanging on the rim while staring down the helpless defender. So disrespectful (in a good way).

That’s just jaw-dropping stuff right there from a dude who had been so awful during the first two seasons of his career. Now he’s doing this?!

With plays like these, the Eagles certainly aren’t missing Jordan Matthews a lot in the slot. I’m not trying to make this an anti-JMatt thing, but Agholor is just so clearly more explosive.

Now, while this trade won’t directly affect the Vikings this season. . .barring an unlikely post-season meeting, the Vikings don’t play the Cardinals and they have already beaten the Saints. . .it could potentially affect the Vikings’ 2018 NFL Draft position.

Can the Saints keep up that sack rate? Probably not. Will they be one of the best defenses in football over the next 11 weeks? I’d be skeptical. Showing steady signs of life after three years of awful performances, though, is promising. Defenses as bad as the Saints have been often regress to the mean by virtue of the dead cat bounce; they get rid of replacement-level talent, change their coaches, invest in new talent, or get luckier.falcons_016

I wish we would have done better, but we won.

Larranaga pondered the question for a bit before answering, and it was clear he wanted to pick the right words.

I would say, on the court, people probably don’t realize what an unbelievable help defender [Horford] is, Larranaga said. You might see a blocked shot at the end of games, but it’s how he is in the right position, always. He’s covering for teammates constantly. I think people see how unselfish he is, offensively, but he is equally unselfish defensively, and has an equal impact on his teammates’ performance.

“We have a great team,” said Bellinger, a rookie from nearby Chandler, Arizona. “And to come here and sweep them, beat them on their home turf is hard to do and pretty special.”

Darvish, acquired from Texas in a trade deadline deal, struck out seven over five innings to outpitch Arizona’s Zack Greinke and earn the righty his first postseason victory in three tries.

“He’s put me in great positions to succeed,” Green said. “That’s all you can ask for as a coach and he’s given me that. I’m working hard to prove myself to him that I can do it.”

“He’s so well-loved, so respected around here. No one here wants to see that,” Mayo said.

The rest of the Panthers didn’t need to see to believe that this development can be worrisome for Kuechly, despite it feeling less devastating.

Here’s the latest edition of “He Said What?!”

Hundley on taking over for injured Rodgers: “Obviously, Aaron is Aaron, but I’m Brett. So, let’s have some fun.”

Brady on breaking the record for most regular-season victories: “I wish we would have done better, but we won.”steelers_038
